TIM MORGAN WOODWORKING
Welcome: Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Tim Morgan. I am a builder by nature, a furniture maker by trade, a father by my wife, Marcelle, and my sons, William and Jamie, and a man who has made a practice of following my passion and trusting that it will take me to where I belong.

I've been working in the relative obscurity of my shop in Conway, Massachusetts while thinking about how I can apply, in a more far-reaching way, what I have found to be of value to me in my life. And yet I'm a simple man—a maker of traditional furniture.

I used to think that I was born a century or two too late. But having no choice in that matter I simply choose to do what wood workers have done for centuries. I work in the manner dictated by the nature of wood (employing mortice and tenon joinery, dovetails, wedges, pegs, frame and panel construction, etc.) in the aesthetic vocabulary of my forefathers. Using the materials available locally—native species such as cherry, maple, oak, pine, chestnut, walnut, etc., rather than "exotic" imported tropical woods—I make useful items for those in my community who will pay me to do so.

It's a simple formula for life in a complex world. I make use of modern tools and machinery but I endeavor to produce pieces of furniture that evoke the same sense of belonging to history that antiques inherently have. My work is the product of a mindset that is relatively timeless.

The scope of my projects varies widely, from restoring antique wooden boats to timber framing homes, and making "period" furniture such as tables, chairs, beds, hutches, chests of drawers, a wall clock and Windsor-style cradle. I've also restored many antique pieces and worked on numerous old houses, schools, churches, and barns.

What I bring to my work, regardless of the specific nature of the project, is a commitment to the integrity of the design, materials and workmanship. Perhaps that sounds dry, but it means everything to me. My work is a creative process, and in that process my values, my personal history (born and raised in New England), my training (the North Bennet Street School in Boston), and my experience (over 25 years in the trade) are physically manifested in the pieces I produce. My interests in history and the traditional aesthetic sense of my ancestors and cultural predecessors informs my every decision both directly and subtly. I am a product of my culture and proudly yet humbly take my place in the history of American woodworking. I am history—and you are, too.

My pieces are not "reproductions." They are "originals" in that I design them starting with a blank piece of paper. But I do so in the aesthetic language of the early American furniture makers just as they would have done 200 years ago. Often I use salvaged or reclaimed materials so that I can produce period pieces made out of wood that was actually harvested in the era coinciding with the design of the piece.

The furniture I make is primarily meant to be functional, practical, useful. However, it is my hope that it will also provoke a visceral response. That the experience of interacting with, for example, my chestnut trestle table will be like spending time with an old and trusted friend. Warm, comfortable, deeply satisfying.
